Few public courses in South Jersey carry as much architectural prestige as Rancocas. The layout was designed by Donald Ross, the Scottish-born master responsible for Pinehurst No. 2 and hundreds of other American classics, and it stands as one of his more underappreciated works in the Mid-Atlantic region. Ross's fingerprints are everywhere: subtly crowned greens that shed approach shots to tricky collection areas, routing that works naturally with the gently rolling terrain, and a strategic tightness that rewards placement over raw power.
Willingboro sits in Burlington County, just east of the Delaware River and a short drive from Philadelphia. The surrounding landscape is classic New Jersey Pine Barrens fringe — sandy soils, native hardwoods, and a quiet, unhurried atmosphere that feels removed from the suburban sprawl nearby. That setting suits a Ross course well; the land does much of the work.
As a public facility, Rancocas is genuinely accessible, and that accessibility makes it something of a regional treasure for players who want a real test of traditional parkland golf without a private-club price tag.
