Few golf courses in New Mexico ask you to play at nearly 7,500 feet above sea level, and Pendaries does exactly that — tucked into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains north of Las Vegas, NM, in a small mountain village most travelers never find. The elevation and the thin air mean the ball flies noticeably farther than it would at sea level, a pleasant surprise that comes bundled with cool summer temperatures and the kind of pine-scented mountain air that makes it hard to focus on your scorecard.
The course winds through a narrow canyon valley, and the terrain does most of the design work. Ponderosa pines press in tightly on many holes, demanding accuracy over power, and the Coyote Creek drainage shapes the routing in ways that keep the round interesting from first tee to last green.
Rociada itself is a genuinely remote community, and that isolation gives Pendaries a character that resort courses rarely manufacture — a real mountain retreat where the golf feels secondary to the landscape, until you're actually playing it.
