Few golf courses in the Upper Midwest arrive with quite the backstory of Sweetgrass. Opened in 2008 and designed by Paul Albanese, it was built by the Hannahville Indian Community on tribal land in Michigan's Upper Peninsula — making it one of the more distinctive origin stories in American golf. Albanese routed the course through dense northern forest, letting the natural terrain dictate the layout rather than forcing a design onto it. The result is a track that earns serious attention: Golf Digest has ranked it among the best courses in Michigan, and it regularly draws players willing to make the journey north for something genuinely different.
Harris sits in the western U.P., just outside Escanaba, where the land is heavily wooded and the air carries the kind of quiet you don't find downstate. The course plays through mature hardwoods and pines, with elevation changes and tight corridors that demand accuracy off the tee.
Sweetgrass is the centerpiece of the Island Resort and Casino, but it plays nothing like a resort afterthought — the ambition and craft on display put it firmly in destination-course territory.
