Few Scottsdale courses carry the history that McCormick Ranch does. Opened in 1971 and designed byDesmond Muirhead, it was among the first courses built as part of the landmark McCormick Ranch master-planned community — one of the earliest large-scale residential golf developments in the Valley of the Sun. A second 18, the Pine Course, followed shortly after, cementing the property's place as a pioneering force in what would become one of the most golf-saturated corridors in American golf.
The layout winds through mature desert landscaping alongside the lakes and waterways that define the McCormick Ranch community, giving it a lushness that stands apart from the more exposed desert-target style courses that followed in later decades. Palm and eucalyptus trees line many fairways, and water comes into play on a meaningful number of holes — rewarding patience and placement over raw power.
For visitors, McCormick Ranch represents something genuinely rare in Scottsdale: a public-access course with real roots, where the surroundings feel established rather than manufactured, and the golf holds up without requiring a resort-level green fee to access it.
