Few desert courses in the American Southwest have earned the kind of across-the-board respect that Grayhawk has accumulated since opening in the early 1990s. The Talon Course, designed by David Graham and Gary Panks, plays as a stern test of target golf through the high Sonoran Desert, where saguaro cacti, desert scrub, and rocky terrain demand precision off the tee far more than raw distance. It's the kind of layout where errant shots don't just find rough — they find trouble that ends holes.
Grayhawk sits in north Scottsdale, an area that has become one of the densest concentrations of quality public-access golf anywhere in the country. The Talon has hosted PGA Tour events, including the Frys.com Open, which gave it a national stage and confirmed what desert regulars already knew. The course rewards strategic thinking and clean ballstriking over power.
For visiting golfers, Scottsdale's winter and spring conditions are close to ideal — warm, dry, and brilliantly clear. Grayhawk sits at a slightly higher elevation than the city core, which keeps the turf firm and the desert scenery dramatic from first tee to final green.
