West Malling sits in the Kentish heartland, a pocket of southeast England where the North Downs roll through fruit orchards and old market towns before the countryside gives way to the commuter belt edging toward London. Kent has a modest but genuine golf tradition, and the area around Malling — with its Norman abbey ruins and quiet village character — provides a backdrop that feels more rooted than the manicured golf estates that proliferated across the Home Counties during the 1990s boom years.
Kings Hill itself takes its name from the large mixed-use development built on the former RAF West Malling airfield, a wartime and Cold War site that gave the area a second life as a planned business and residential community from the early 1990s onward. Golf courses attached to such developments often carry a corporate, functional feel, and Kings Hill sits squarely in that tradition — a parkland layout designed to serve the community around it rather than chase destination status.
For visiting golfers, that means a straightforward, accessible round on reasonably open parkland terrain. Expectations should be set accordingly: this is a course for a pleasant afternoon in the Kentish countryside, not a pilgrimage.
