Tarraleah Golf Club

Tarraleah sits on the Central Plateau of Tasmania, one of the island state's more remote and atmospheric corners, where the landscape is shaped by hydro-electric infrastructure, cool highland air, and sweeping views across river gorges and eucalypt wilderness. Getting here requires intent — this is not a course you stumble upon — but that remoteness is precisely the point.

The village of Tarraleah was built in the 1930s as a workers' settlement for the Hydro-Electric Commission, and the golf club grew out of that same era of self-sufficient community life. Courses like this one carry a particular character: maintained and kept alive by a small, loyal membership rather than commercial ambition, with a layout that works with the natural contours of the land rather than against them.

At par 69, the course plays shorter than a championship test, but highland conditions — wind off the plateau, firm ground, cool temperatures for much of the year — can sharpen the challenge considerably. This is golf for the experience of the place as much as the scorecard.
