Tadmarton Heath

Few heathland courses in England carry quite the pedigree of Tadmarton Heath. Laid out in 1922 by Hutchison and Hawtree — a partnership responsible for some of the finest layouts of the interwar period — the course sits on a ridge of open heath in north Oxfordshire (the "BKM" designation notwithstanding, this is firmly Oxfordshire countryside), where the terrain has shaped the routing as much as any architect's pencil. It ranks consistently among the most admired heathland tracks in the Midlands, prized for its authenticity and the fact that it has been left largely alone over the decades.

The heath itself does the heavy lifting aesthetically: gorse, heather, and fine turf give the place a character closer to Surrey than the shires, and the exposed ridgeline means wind is rarely absent as a factor. A par 69 signals a course that rewards precision and course management over raw length.

Tadmarton is a private members' club, and that intimacy shows — unhurried, proudly traditional, and serious about its golf without taking itself too seriously.
