Few stretches of Surrey heathland rival the terrain around Hindhead, where the dramatic topography of the Devil's Punch Bowl and the surrounding commons creates some of the most visually striking inland golf country in England. Hindhead Golf Club has occupied this ground since 1904, and the course reflects the golden age of British heathland design — heather, silver birch, and Scots pine defining the corridors, with the land itself doing much of the architectural work. It's a layout that rewards accuracy over power, where position off the tee consistently matters more than distance.
The par 70 configuration is not a concession to brevity but a product of the terrain — the course asks genuine questions throughout, and the routing makes clever use of the slopes and natural contours that characterise this part of the North Downs. Golfers who know southern England's classic inland tracks will find Hindhead sits comfortably in distinguished company.
Surrey has produced some of the finest heathland golf anywhere in the world, and this corner of the county, near the Hampshire border, carries that tradition with quiet confidence.
