Few courses anywhere announce their ambitions quite as boldly as Wooden Sticks. This private facility in Uxbridge, Ontario is built around a remarkable central conceit: each of its 18 holes is a loving recreation of a famous hole from a legendary course — Augusta National, St. Andrews, Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, and others among them. It's an idea that could easily tip into theme-park gimmick, but the execution is taken seriously enough that Wooden Sticks has earned genuine respect within Canadian golf circles and draws players who want to test themselves against the architecture of the game's great venues without crossing an ocean or securing an impossible invitation.
Uxbridge sits in Durham Region, roughly an hour northeast of Toronto in Ontario's lake-country fringe — rolling terrain, mixed hardwood forest, and a four-season climate that keeps the season firmly defined. The land suits golf naturally, and the property uses its contours well.
The par of 74 is itself a clue to the course's character: this is not a layout trimmed to convenience. The design favors variety and spectacle over symmetry, and first-time visitors are genuinely advised to do their homework on the holes being replicated before they arrive. Coming in cold is fine; coming in prepared is better.
