Few courses in the Home Counties wear their setting as naturally as Goring & Streatley, which occupies the chalk downland hills straddling the Thames Valley on the Berkshire-Oxfordshire border. The club sits above the twin villages of Goring and Streatley, where the river cuts through the Goring Gap — one of the most photographed stretches of the Thames Path — and the course makes full use of that elevated, rolling terrain. The turf here, rooted in free-draining chalk, tends to play firm and fast for much of the season in the manner of traditional English downland golf.
The layout rewards course management over raw power, with the hillside lies and open exposure to the prevailing westerlies demanding thoughtful shot selection rather than simply bombing it down the fairway. The par-71 configuration suggests at least one hole where length has been traded for something more interesting.
Reading sits just a few miles east, but up on the downs the setting feels genuinely rural, with wide views across the valley that place a round here in a broader landscape most courses can only envy.
