Few American golf clubs carry the architectural pedigree of Detroit Golf Club. The North Course is one of 2 full 18-hole layouts on the property, both designed by Donald Ross — making DGC one of a small handful of clubs in the country to have an entire 36-hole campus shaped by the master from Dornoch. Ross completed his work here in the early 1920s, and the courses remain among the most significant examples of his craft in the Midwest, drawing serious students of golf design from well beyond Michigan.
The club sits in the Palmer Park neighborhood on Detroit's northwest side, occupying a beautifully wooded property that feels removed from the urban fabric surrounding it. Ross worked with the natural contours of the land, and the North Course reflects his characteristic philosophy: subtly crowned and angled greens that reward precise approach play, and a routing that uses the terrain honestly rather than imposing spectacle upon it.
Detroit Golf Club has a long tradition of hosting elite competition, including multiple U.S. Amateur Championships. The North Course plays as a genuine test of golf — not through brute length, but through the quiet, persistent demands Ross always placed on ball-striking and course management.
