Few American golf clubs carry quite the sense of purposeful remove that the Ausable Club does. Perched in the Adirondack High Peaks region of upstate New York, St. Huberts is less a town than a destination — a quiet enclave on the eastern slope of the range where the air is sharp, the hardwood canopy is dense, and the outside world genuinely recedes. The club itself is rooted in the tradition of the great Adirondack camp era, when families of means built private retreats here in deliberate defiance of convenience.
The course plays to a par of 66, and that number tells you something essential about the design philosophy: this is mountain golf shaped around the land rather than imposed upon it. Expect elevation change, tight corridors through timber, and holes that reward local knowledge and a controlled ball flight over raw distance.
Access here is private and guarded closely, very much in keeping with the Adirondack tradition of institutions that see exclusivity not as pretension but as preservation. If you find yourself on these fairways, you are almost certainly a guest of a member — and that, in itself, is part of what makes the round feel like something.
