Firerock Country Club occupies one of the more dramatic addresses in the Phoenix metro area — Fountain Hills, the small Sonoran Desert town built around the world's tallest fountain and framed by the McDowell Mountains and Four Peaks in the distance. The terrain here is genuine high desert, all saguaro, palo verde, and rocky volcanic ridgelines, and Firerock makes no attempt to disguise that fact. The course plays through and around the rugged hillsides that give the community its name, with elevation changes that reward course management as much as raw power.
Gary Panks, the Arizona-based architect responsible for numerous desert layouts across the Southwest, designed Firerock with the natural contours of the land doing much of the work. The routing uses rocky outcroppings as both aesthetic backdrop and genuine strategic hazard, and the views across the valley toward Scottsdale are a constant presence.
As a private members' club, Firerock is built around a residential community and offers the unhurried pace and conditioning standards that come with that model. It is serious desert golf in a visually striking setting.
