Barnbougle Dunes

Few courses anywhere in the world have had an origin story quite like this one. Barnbougle Dunes was built on a working potato farm on Tasmania's remote north coast, a project that came together through the unlikely partnership of farmer Richard Sattler and American course designer Tom Doak — with Mike Clayton contributing alongside him. When it opened in 2004, it immediately rewrote expectations for what Australian golf could be, landing near the top of virtually every serious ranking on the continent and drawing international visitors who would otherwise have had no reason to find themselves in this corner of the island state.

The setting is the thing. Raw duneland tumbles directly onto Bass Strait, and the routing moves through and over sandhills with a naturalness that feels earned rather than engineered. Wind is a constant factor here, shaping every club selection and turning a benign morning round into something entirely different by afternoon.

Bridport is a small, quiet fishing town, and the remoteness is genuine — getting here requires intent. That pilgrimage quality is part of what makes Barnbougle Dunes feel special. A second course, Lost Farm, was added next door in 2010, making the trek even more worthwhile.
