Wolston Park Golf Club occupies genuinely unusual ground — the course sits within the precinct of Wolston Park Hospital, a heritage-listed psychiatric facility established in the 1860s on the southwestern outskirts of Brisbane. That history gives the setting a character unlike almost anything else in Queensland golf: mature fig trees, old stonework, and a sense of institutional solitude that has softened over generations into something quietly atmospheric.
The par-67 layout reflects the site's constraints and topography rather than any ambition to stretch players to their limits. Shorter par 4s and a complement of par 3s reward accuracy and course management over raw distance, making it a genuine test of ball-striking rather than power. It's the kind of track that reveals itself slowly — courses playing under par 70 often punish sloppy iron play far more than golfers expect.
Wacol itself is an outer Brisbane suburb rather than a destination in its own right, but for local golfers the club offers something genuinely distinctive: a round played inside one of Queensland's most historically significant precincts, with all the oddness and charm that entails.
