Portsalon Golf Club

Few courses anywhere in Ireland reward the journey to reach them quite like Portsalon. Laid out on the Fanad Peninsula along the western shore of Lough Swilly, the course occupies one of the most dramatically beautiful stretches of land in Irish golf — a mix of natural duneland, towering marram-covered sandhills, and views across the lough to the Inishowen Peninsula beyond. The original layout dates to 1891, making Portsalon one of the oldest clubs in Ulster, though the course was significantly reimagined in the early 2000s by Pat Ruddy, who restored and extended it into a genuine links test worthy of the terrain it occupies.

Ruddy's redesign pushed the course hard into the dunes, producing holes that tumble and climb through the landscape rather than sitting politely atop it. The opening stretch along the beach is particularly memorable, setting a tone of raw, elemental golf that carries through the round.

Portsalon sits near the village of Fanad, deep in northwest Donegal — remote by any measure, but that remoteness is the point. This is unhurried, uncommercialised golf in a county that still takes the game seriously, surrounded by some of the wildest coastal scenery in Europe.
