Tobiano Golf Course

Few courses in Canada announce themselves quite so dramatically. Tobiano sits on a series of volcanic bluffs above Kamloops Lake in the BC Interior, where the terrain drops and rises with a severity that turns almost every hole into a study in elevation change. Designed by Thomas McBroom and opened in 2008, it quickly earned recognition as one of Canada's finest public courses — a legitimate destination layout that can measure up against anything in the country.

McBroom worked with the land rather than against it, routing holes along ridgelines and canyon edges so that the views are structural, not incidental. The landscape here is semi-arid Thompson River country: sagebrush, bunch grass, ponderosa pine, and a color palette of tawny gold and brown that looks nothing like the lush green corridors most golfers associate with top-end courses. That starkness is part of the appeal.

Tobiano is about 40 minutes southwest of Kamloops, making it accessible as a day trip but compelling enough to plan a stay around. It plays as challenging as it looks — exposed to wind, unforgiving off the edges, and visually relentless from the first tee to the last green.
