Few courses in western Canada command a setting quite like this one. Kokanee Springs sits in Crawford Bay on the east shore of Kootenay Lake — one of British Columbia's longest and deepest lakes — with the Purcell Mountains rising sharply behind the layout. The course opened in 1967 and was designed by Norman Woods, and it has built a quiet but devoted following among those who make the journey to this remote corner of the province. It has appeared on numerous lists of Canada's best courses, a remarkable achievement for a layout this far off the tourist circuit.
The design routes players through stands of old-growth cedar and Douglas fir, with the lake and mountains providing an ever-present backdrop. Deer are a common sight, and the overall atmosphere is more wilderness retreat than manicured resort — which is precisely the appeal. The course plays to a par of 71 and rewards shot-making over raw power.
Crawford Bay is a tiny, unhurried community that draws artists, outdoor enthusiasts, and travelers willing to reach it by a ferry crossing from Balfour — a short but memorable ride that adds to the sense of arrival. Playing Kokanee Springs feels genuinely earned, and that quality of remoteness is inseparable from what makes a round here worth remembering.
