Carlsbad sits in the Pecos Valley of southeastern New Mexico, where the Chihuahuan Desert meets the Pecos River in a landscape of surprising contrast — arid mesas and canyon country giving way to irrigated lowlands and cottonwood-lined riverbanks. It's oil and potash country, an industrial town that also happens to border one of the country's great natural wonders in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Golf out here exists on its own terms, well outside the resort circuits of Albuquerque or Santa Fe, built by and for the people who actually live in this corner of the state.
Riverside Country Club is the golf institution of Carlsbad — a private members' club that serves a tight-knit community rather than passing tourists. The par-71 layout suggests some architectural personality, a departure from the symmetry of a standard par-72 design that often signals a course shaped closely around the land available to it.
Membership here carries the meaning it tends to in smaller cities: a genuine social hub, a place where the same foursome has likely held a standing Saturday tee time for decades. Expect a course that rewards local knowledge and familiarity over raw distance.
