Few golf settings in Canada match the sheer drama of Kananaskis Country. Mount Kidd sits within the Kananaskis Village resort corridor roughly 90 kilometres southwest of Calgary, framed by the jagged limestone peaks of the Canadian Rockies and the Kananaskis River valley. The course takes its name from the 2,958-metre peak looming directly above the layout — a backdrop that makes concentration genuinely difficult in the best possible way.
Mount Kidd is 1 of 2 courses at the Kananaskis Country Golf Course facility, a provincially operated destination that has long held a reputation as among the finest public-access mountain golf experiences in North America. The Robert Trent Jones Sr. design opened in 1983 alongside its sister course, Mount Lorette, as part of a broader provincial investment in the Kananaskis corridor ahead of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Jones worked the routing through spruce forest, wetlands, and riverside terrain in a way that rewards course management over raw power.
Wildlife sightings — elk, deer, the occasional bear — are routine enough that the course posts protocols for them. Afternoon thunderstorms roll through quickly in summer, and the high elevation keeps conditions cool even in July. This is mountain golf at its most unapologetically grand.
