Few courses anywhere can claim a lineage as long or as storied as North Berwick West Links. The club traces its origins to 1832, making it one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, and the course itself sits on linksland that has been played over for centuries. Its architect, in the truest sense, is the land — the layout evolved organically along the Firth of Forth rather than being shaped by any single designer, giving it an authenticity and eccentricity that modern design simply cannot manufacture.
The holes here are genuinely unlike anything else. The 15th, Redan, is one of the most copied par 3s in golf history, its angled green and deep front-left bunker having inspired imitations from Shinnecock Hills to National Golf Links of America. The 14th, Gate, plays through an actual stone wall. These are not gimmicks — they are relics of a time when golf courses followed the land's own logic.
North Berwick itself is a pleasant seaside town on the East Lothian coast, about 25 miles east of Edinburgh, sitting within Scotland's most celebrated stretch of links golf — Gullane, Muirfield, and Dunbar are all near neighbors. The views across the Firth toward the Bass Rock are as good as golf scenery gets.
