Few university golf courses in the Midwest carry the pedigree of Veenker Memorial. The course sits on the campus of Iowa State University and was designed by Ames native and ISU alumnus Fred Veenker, after whom it is named — a former Cyclones football and basketball coach who became a driving force in establishing the facility in the 1930s. It has served as the home course for Iowa State's men's and women's golf programs for decades, giving it a dual identity as both a competitive collegiate venue and a public course open to the broader community.
Ames is a college town defined by the rhythms of academic life, and Veenker reflects that energy — well-maintained, serious about the game, and genuinely accessible. Central Iowa's gently rolling terrain shapes the routing, with mature trees throughout the layout demanding accuracy off the tee. The course plays firm and fast in summer, when the region's heat and occasional drought stress make course management as important as raw power.
For visitors, Veenker offers something increasingly rare: a full-length, well-regarded public course on a Big 12 campus, where the surrounding Iowa State grounds add a sense of occasion that a typical municipal simply cannot match.
