Few private clubs on the West Coast carry the quiet prestige of the Valley Club of Montecito. Designed by Alister MacKenzie — the Scottish architect behind Augusta National and Cypress Point — and opened in 1929, it stands as one of his most underappreciated masterworks. MacKenzie shaped the routing across a gentle inland valley just minutes from the Pacific, and the result is a course that rewards strategic thinking far more than brute force. Firm, fast turf, subtle green complexes, and carefully placed bunkering are hallmarks of his hand throughout.
Montecito itself is one of the most affluent and architecturally gracious communities in California, a sun-drenched enclave just east of Santa Barbara where old money, Mediterranean landscaping, and a relaxed sophistication set the tone. The club reflects that character — understated from the outside, exceptional once you're in.
Because MacKenzie layouts age extraordinarily well when respected, the Valley Club remains a genuine pilgrimage destination for architecture enthusiasts who rank his surviving American work. Getting an invitation is the hard part.
