Few golf clubs in Canada carry the kind of institutional weight that Royal Ottawa does. Founded in 1891, it is one of the oldest clubs in the country and holds a Royal designation granted by the Crown — a distinction shared by only a handful of Canadian courses. The club sits just across the Ottawa River from the nation's capital, in Gatineau, Quebec, and that border-straddling identity — English tradition planted firmly on French-Canadian soil — gives the place a character unlike anywhere else in the region.
The "Royal Nine" name reflects the club's historic layout, a compact 18-hole routing built around a shorter, strategic par-70 design rather than the power-game tests that dominate modern course construction. That format rewards shot-shaping and course management over raw distance, and it gives the course an old-world feel consistent with its Victorian-era roots.
Gatineau sits within the broader Ottawa Valley golf scene, where the Gatineau Hills and the Ottawa River corridor define the landscape. Summers are warm and relatively short, which tends to concentrate the season and sharpen the local appreciation for good golf when conditions finally allow it.
