Godfrey sits in Madison County along the Illinois side of the Mississippi River bluffs, a stretch of southwestern Illinois that the locals simply call the Metro East — the sprawling communities across the river from St. Louis. It's genuine Midwestern golf country, where the land rolls and pitches between river bottoms and upland terrain, and the game has deep working-class roots tied to a region that never had much patience for pretension.
Rolling Hills reads, by its name and setting, as a daily-fee course built to serve that community — the kind of place where a twosome can walk on a Tuesday afternoon and feel entirely at home. A par-71 layout suggests at least a couple of short par-4s or a missing par-5, which often signals a routing that makes clever use of tighter, hillier ground rather than sprawling acreage.
Metro East has produced serious golfers over the years, fed by a dense network of accessible public courses. Rolling Hills fits that tradition: unpretentious, honest, and oriented toward the everyday player who just wants a fair game on real terrain.
