One of the Chicago area's oldest and most storied private clubs, Evanston Golf Club has a history stretching back to the 1890s, making it a genuine artifact of American golf's formative era. The club actually predates its Skokie address — it migrated from its original Evanston home before settling on the North Shore, carrying its traditions with it. The layout plays to a par 70, which in a private club context almost always signals a design philosophy that prizes precision and strategic variety over raw length, typically featuring a pair of par 3s in place of a conventional par 5.
The North Shore of Chicago is serious golf country. The corridor running through Evanston, Skokie, Wilmette, and Winnetka contains a remarkable concentration of classic private clubs, many of them shaped by the golden age of American course architecture. Skokie Country Club, just down the road, hosted the 1922 U.S. Open, and that competitive heritage runs through the whole region.
For members, a club like this offers something a scorecard cannot quantify — a sense of continuity, of playing ground that generations of Chicago golfers have walked before them.
