Hollywood Lakes takes its name from the network of water features that define much of the layout — a course where the ponds and lakes aren't incidental hazards but the organizing principle of the design. Opened in 1991 and laid out on low-lying ground in north County Dublin, the course was built to bring something of a parkland resort feel to a part of Ireland more associated with links golf along the nearby coast. The setting is flat and open, the fairways framed by mature trees and those ever-present water hazards, and the whole effect is quietly demanding rather than dramatic.
Ballyboughal sits in the agricultural hinterland between Dublin city and the Boyne Valley, well away from the tourist trail but accessible enough to attract a steady following from club golfers across the greater Dublin area. The surrounding landscape — wide fields, hedgerows, low skies — gives the course an unhurried, workaday character.
For visiting players, Hollywood Lakes offers a fair parkland test where course management matters more than raw power. Water comes into play on a significant number of holes, so the round tends to reward patience over ambition.
