Few public courses on Long Island carry the pedigree of Long Island National. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1999, the course occupies a former agricultural property in Riverhead — the kind of open, rolling terrain that Jones Jr. shaped into a layout with genuine strategic bite. Broad fairways give way to well-bunkered greens, and the course rewards players who think their way around rather than simply overpower it. It has earned consistent recognition as one of the stronger public-access options in the New York metropolitan area.
Riverhead sits at the fork where Long Island splits into its North and South Forks, and that geography matters. The land here is flatter and more rural than the island's congested western reaches, with a scrubby, links-adjacent quality to the vegetation and sky. The course captures that openness — wind is a real factor and changes how every club decision reads.
For visiting golfers, Long Island National offers a level of design ambition that public golf doesn't always deliver this close to New York City. It plays firm and fast in summer, and the par-71 routing has enough variety to reward a second look.
