Appomattox carries one of American history's most resonant names — the Virginia county where Lee's surrender to Grant in April 1865 effectively ended the Civil War. The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park draws visitors from around the world, and the surrounding Piedmont countryside retains much of the quiet, unhurried character that defines this part of central Virginia.
