Few golf experiences in the New York metropolitan area carry the sheer drama of Bayonne Golf Club. Designed by Eric Bergstol and opened in 2006, the course was carved from a former industrial landfill on a peninsula in Newark Bay — a transformation as audacious as any in modern golf course architecture. The routing was influenced by the great Scottish and Irish links, and the result is a sweeping, windswept layout of dramatic elevation changes, deep fescue rough, and firm, fast fairways that reward creative shot-making over brute force. Golf Digest and other major publications have consistently ranked it among the top public-access courses in the United States.
The setting is genuinely unlike anything else in American golf. The Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the working harbor define the horizon on nearly every hole — an industrial grandeur that somehow feels entirely at home with the links aesthetic.
Because the course sits exposed on a peninsula, wind is the ever-present fifth element here. Club selection swings wildly from round to round, and the same hole can play as an entirely different puzzle depending on the day.
