Salt Lake City's municipal golf scene punches well above its weight, and Bonneville Golf Course — perched on the east bench of the Salt Lake Valley — is a big reason why. Opened in 1929 and among the oldest public courses in Utah, it traces its layout across the lower foothills of the Wasatch Front, where the terrain does the design work that architects elsewhere have to manufacture. The elevation gain and loss is genuine, the views across the valley to the Oquirrh Mountains are expansive, and the tree-lined fairways feel mature in the way only decades of growth can produce.
Playing Bonneville is a different experience than the flat valley-floor layouts nearby. Uneven lies, elevation-adjusted distances, and cooling afternoon winds off the mountains keep rounds honest, rewarding local knowledge and course management over raw power.
As an affordable, walkable public course with real character, Bonneville has served generations of Salt Lake golfers — weekday regulars, university players, and visitors who want something more interesting than a generic resort track. It is a civic asset in the truest sense.
