Few places on earth carry golf's history as heavily as Musselburgh. The town on the Firth of Forth, just east of Edinburgh, has a legitimate claim to being the oldest golf venue in the world, with documented play stretching back to at least 1672 — and some historians push the evidence further still. The original Musselburgh Links hosted the Open Championship 6 times in the late 19th century, and the feather-ball and gutta-percha eras played out on this very ground. That weight of history is impossible to ignore when you're standing on the turf.
The course today is a public links shared with Musselburgh Racecourse, which means the layout wraps around and through a working horse-racing track — one of the more genuinely eccentric settings in all of golf. The turf is firm, the wind off the Forth is a constant factor, and the experience is about as far from a manicured parkland resort as the game gets.
This is municipal golf at its most historically resonant. Locals play it year-round, green fees remain accessible, and no amount of polish has been applied to sand away its rough edges. Come here for the antiquity and the authenticity, not for perfectly raked bunkers.
