Ottershaw sits in the Surrey commuter belt, that stretch of green-belt country between the M25 and the North Downs where golf courses have taken root among pine, heather, and silver birch with almost reckless enthusiasm. Surrey has long been one of England's richest counties for the game — Wentworth, Sunningdale, and Walton Heath are all within reasonable distance — and the landscape here lends itself naturally to heathland-style layouts where sandy soil drains quickly and the turf stays firm through much of the year.
Longcross takes its name from an old local landmark, and the course occupies ground typical of this part of northwest Surrey: wooded, slightly undulating, with the kind of natural bunkering and rough that heathland terrain provides without much persuasion.
