Few golf venues carry the weight of history that Pinehurst does, and No. 4 occupies a fascinating position within that legacy — long the resort's workhorse track, it has been remade twice into something far more serious. Donald Ross originally designed the course, and after decades of evolution, Gil Hanse was brought in for a complete restoration completed in 2018. Hanse stripped away the conventional rough and conventional thinking alike, returning the layout to a wire-grass-and-sand aesthetic that echoes the minimalist philosophy Ross understood instinctively. The result is a course that rewards ground game thinking and punishes complacency.
Pinehurst sits in the Sandhills of North Carolina, a region where the sandy soil, longleaf pine forests, and mild climate created ideal conditions for golf to take deep root over a century ago. The "Home of American Golf" tag is not marketing — this village and its courses genuinely shaped how the game developed in the United States.
No. 4 now hosts elite amateur and professional competition in its own right, no longer content to play second fiddle to its famous neighbor. Visitors who work through the full Pinehurst rotation often find it among the most thought-provoking rounds on the property.
