Ulen Country Club carries one of the more distinguished pedigrees in Indiana golf. The course was designed by Donald Ross, the Scottish-born architect whose imprint on American golf is virtually unmatched, and his fingerprints remain visible in the subtly crowned greens, precise bunkering, and the way the layout rewards strategic thinking over raw power. A par 70 here is no concession to ease — Ross routinely built courses that demanded shot-making across every club in the bag, and Ulen is no exception.
Lebanon sits in Boone County, roughly 25 miles northwest of Indianapolis in the heart of central Indiana's rolling agricultural landscape. The region doesn't offer dramatic elevation changes, but Ross had a gift for coaxing interest and variety from modest terrain, and the property reflects that ability. The course has served its membership quietly for decades, the kind of place where serious Indiana golfers know the name even if they've never had the chance to play it.
Private clubs of this character tend to wear their history lightly — well-maintained, community-rooted, and resistant to unnecessary modernization. Ulen fits that mold, and a round here feels connected to a longer tradition of Midwestern golf done properly.
