Macclesfield sits at the edge of the Cheshire Plain where the land begins its slow climb toward the Peak District, and The Tytherington makes full use of that transitional landscape — mature parkland threading through the kind of quietly prosperous English countryside that has always suited a golf club of this character. The course occupies the grounds of a former country estate, giving it the established tree-lined corridors and natural contours that newer layouts spend decades trying to replicate.
Opened in 1986 and designed by Dave Thomas, the course quickly built a serious regional reputation. Thomas, who also shaped Belfry's Brabazon course, brought that same instinct for strategic length and defined risk-reward decisions to Tytherington. It hosted the European Tour's British Masters in the late 1980s, giving it a legitimate moment in professional golf's spotlight that few Cheshire clubs can claim.
The private members' club atmosphere here is unhurried and well-maintained, the kind of place where the course conditioning reflects genuine pride of ownership. For visiting golfers, it rewards straight driving and patience — the parkland setting is beautiful, but the trees are very much in play.
