Opened in 2002, Dragon's Fire Golf Club sits on the grounds of Hamilton Field, the historic former U.S. Army Air Forces base in Novato — technically within the Hamilton area of Marin County, north of San Francisco. The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus II and built on reclaimed wetland and airfield terrain, giving it a distinctly open, links-influenced character uncommon in Northern California. Wide corridors framed by tall fescue grasses, dramatic mounding, and expansive views across the marshes toward San Pablo Bay define the look and feel of the layout.
The Nicklaus II design leans on strategic bunkering and firm, fast conditions rather than tight tree-lined corridors, rewarding players who think their way around rather than simply overpower it. The Bay Area wind, which can shift and strengthen significantly on this exposed site, functions as an invisible but decisive hazard on almost every hole.
Dragon's Fire occupies an interesting niche in the Bay Area golf scene — a daily-fee course with genuine visual drama and terrain character that sets it apart from the region's many wooded, parkland-style tracks.
