Carved into the eucalyptus-and-redwood hills above Berkeley, this 18-hole layout sits inside the East Bay Regional Park system — which means your playing partners on any given morning might be a retired professor, a Cal sophomore swinging for the first time, and a single-digit handicapper grinding out a serious round. That mix is part of what makes the place.
The numbers are deceptively honest. At 6,260 yards from the tips with a slope of 130 and a course rating of 71.6, Tilden earns every stroke it asks for. Par is 70, and the East Bay hills ensure that yardage isn't the whole story — elevation change, sidehill lies, and the way fog rolls in off the Bay to cool and deaden the air all conspire against lazy ball-striking. The six tee sets stretching down to 5,425 yards make it genuinely playable for a wide range of abilities, but scoring well requires local knowledge and shot discipline.
The setting is the real gift. Berkeley's hillside parks feel genuinely wild — dense tree corridors, the smell of wet eucalyptus in the morning, sudden views eastward toward the valley. This is golf lived-in by a community, worn in the best possible way.
