Few municipal courses in metro Detroit carry the history that Rackham does. Designed by the legendary Donald Ross and opened in 1924, it was a gift to the city of Detroit from Horace Rackham — the lawyer and early Ford Motor Company investor whose estate also funded the University of Michigan's Rackham Graduate School. That civic generosity produced one of the most accessible Donald Ross designs in the Midwest, and the course remains operated by the Detroit Golf Club under a long-standing agreement with the city.
Ross's fingerprints are unmistakable here: crowned greens that reject imprecise approaches, subtle fairway contours that reward positioning over raw power, and a routing that works naturally with the gentle Oakland County terrain. The tree canopy is mature and dense, giving the course a private-club feel that belies its public status.
Huntington Woods itself is a small, tight-knit inner-ring suburb, and Rackham fits its character well — unhurried, understated, and better than it has any obligation to be. For Detroit-area golfers, playing a Ross design at a municipal price point is a genuine privilege.
