Few American golf clubs carry a resume quite like Hazeltine's. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the course in 1962, and it was built with a specific ambition: to host major championship golf. That vision paid off almost immediately, and Hazeltine has since become one of the most decorated venues in the country, having staged the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, and the U.S. Women's Open across multiple decades. The 2016 Ryder Cup — a victory for the American team — remains one of the most electrifying team competitions in recent memory, and Hazeltine's amphitheater-style holes made it a spectacular stage.
The course sits in Chaska, a southwest suburb of Minneapolis, wrapped around Lake Hazeltine. That lakeside setting shapes the experience considerably: wind off the water is a constant factor, and several holes play directly along or across its shoreline. Rees Jones completed a significant redesign in the 1990s, sharpening the layout for the modern game.
Minnesota golf has a surprisingly devoted following given the compressed season, and Hazeltine is the undisputed flagship of that culture — a private club that has earned and kept a place among the elite tournament venues in the world.
