Operated by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Hansen Dam sits in the far northeastern corner of the San Fernando Valley, in the shadow of the San Gabriel Mountains. The course takes its name from the flood-control basin built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940s — a reminder that this corner of the Valley has always had a practical, working-class character, and the golf course fits that tradition comfortably.
As one of LA's public-access layouts, Hansen Dam draws a loyal local following from Pacoima, Sylmar, and the surrounding neighborhoods — communities that don't always have easy access to the manicured private clubs dotting the region's wealthier foothills. The course offers a legitimate par 72 test without the pretense, and the San Gabriel range looming to the north gives rounds here a backdrop that plenty of far pricier courses would envy.
The Valley's climate means near-year-round playability, with dry summers and mild winters. If you're looking for tournament prestige or architectural pedigree, this isn't the destination — but for accessible, no-fuss municipal golf within the sprawl of Los Angeles, it earns its place.
