Kwajalein

Kwajalein Atoll sits in the central Pacific, roughly halfway between Hawaii and Australia, and the golf course here is almost certainly one of the most remote and unusual places to play 18 holes on earth. The course serves the American military and civilian personnel stationed at the U.S. Army Garrison Kwajalein Atoll (USAG-KA), a base whose history stretches back to some of the most intense fighting of the Pacific theater in World War II. Playing here is not a matter of booking a tee time from the mainland — access is restricted to those with legitimate ties to the installation.

What surrounds you is a narrow strip of coral land barely above sea level, framed by the turquoise lagoon on one side and the open Pacific on the other. The trade winds blow constantly, and the equatorial heat is real. Vegetation is sparse and low, the sky enormous, and the sense of isolation profound.

For the personnel who play it regularly, this course is far more than a recreational amenity — it is a genuine community anchor, one of the few places on a very small island where the pace of garrison life gives way to something unhurried.
