Few golf clubs in Asia carry the institutional weight of The Hong Kong Golf Club. Founded in 1889 — making it one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia — it grew from a modest 9-hole layout on Happy Valley racecourse into a sprawling multi-course operation at Fanling in the New Territories, where the club has been headquartered since 1911. The Fanling facility comprises 3 courses: the Old, New, and Eden, each with its own character, though all share the same gently rolling terrain shaded by mature trees and bancoulier shrubs that give Fanling its distinctive parkland feel. The club has also long maintained a 9-hole course at Deep Water Bay on Hong Kong Island.
Fanling is most associated with the Hong Kong Open, one of Asia's most storied professional tournaments, which the club hosted for decades. Over the years the event attracted champions of genuine global stature, cementing the club's reputation well beyond the region.
Access is strictly private, and the club maintains the considered, unhurried atmosphere of a traditional colonial-era institution. Playing here feels genuinely removed from the density of the city below — a quality that, in Hong Kong, is rarer than any particular design feature.
