Few places in British Columbia frame a round of golf quite like Fernie. Sitting in the Elk Valley, surrounded by the jagged peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the Fernie Golf and Country Club occupies terrain that is genuinely dramatic — the kind of mountain backdrop that makes it hard to keep your eyes on the ball. The course plays to a par 70, which hints at a layout that leans on precision over raw power, likely featuring a collection of shorter par 4s that demand accurate shotmaking rather than simply rewarding the long hitter.
Fernie itself is a small, tight-knit community with a strong outdoor identity — better known to most Canadians for its skiing at Fernie Alpine Resort than for its golf, which gives the club a pleasantly unpretentious character. As a private, members-only club, it serves as a genuine gathering point for local players rather than a destination resort course chasing rankings.
The Elk Valley's season is compressed by the mountain climate, which tends to concentrate the membership and sharpen the community feel of the place. When the course is open, it earns its time.
