Few municipal courses carry a name with as much weight in American golf history as this one. Johnny Goodman was an Omaha native who rose from poverty — reportedly caddying at local clubs to scrape together playing time — to become one of the game's great amateur champions, defeating Bobby Jones at the 1929 U.S. Amateur and later winning the 1933 U.S. Open. He remains the last amateur to win the Open. Naming a public course after him is a fitting tribute: a golfer who came up through exactly the kind of accessible, community golf this facility represents.
The course sits within Omaha's park system, serving the everyday golfer on Nebraska's Missouri River bluffs.
