Ted Robinson's design at Waikele opened in 1992 and quickly earned a reputation as one of O'ahu's most interesting tests — a course that takes full advantage of the flat, open terrain of central O'ahu's Ewa Plain while framing nearly every hole against the dramatic ridgeline of the Waiʻanae Range to the west. Robinson used water extensively throughout the layout, which became something of a calling card for his work across Hawaiʻi and California. The result is a course that rewards accuracy over raw power, where errant shots find ponds and channels with uncomfortable regularity.
The surrounding area tells its own story. Waipahu sits in the heart of O'ahu's former sugar plantation country, and the wide, sunbaked fairways carry that open, agricultural character — a contrast to the lush, jungle-rimmed resort courses found elsewhere on the island. Trade winds sweep through consistently, turning straightforward-looking holes into genuine puzzles.
Waikele draws a strong local following and has long been a popular option for residents seeking a serious round without the resort price tag. It plays to a genuine par 72 challenge that humbles visitors who underestimate the wind and water combination Robinson built into nearly every corner of the property.
