Few courses in the mid-Atlantic carry quite the competitive pedigree of TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. Originally designed by Ed Ault and later refined by Tom and George Fazio, the course spent years hosting the Kemper Open, one of the PGA Tour's most established mid-season stops, drawing major champions and top-ranked players to the Maryland suburbs throughout the 1980s and 1990s. That Tour history is baked into the layout — the TPC designation means it was built with spectators and broadcast angles in mind, and you can still feel that intentional drama in how the closing holes set up.
Potomac sits in one of Washington D.C.'s most affluent corridors, where rolling horse-country estates give way to mature hardwoods and the kind of groomed, unhurried landscape you'd expect just northwest of the Beltway. The Avenel Farm property gives the course genuine topographic variety, with elevation changes that reward strategic ball-striking over raw distance.
At par 70, the course plays shorter on paper than it does in practice. The design leans on precision — tight angles, demanding approach windows, and greens that have been tournament-tested — making this a course that exposes your decision-making as readily as your swing.
