Few courses in the southeast of England wear their age as openly as Holtye. Laid out across the High Weald of Kent and Sussex — right on the county border near Edenbridge — the course follows a stretch of the ancient Roman road known as Watling Street's lesser cousin, and sections of the old iron-working landscape of the Weald are visible in the undulations underfoot. This is genuinely old golfing ground, and the club's roots reach back to the late Victorian era.
The par 66 format tells you something important before you even arrive: this is a course built around accuracy, not length. Short par 4s demand precise placement rather than power, and the heathland-style terrain — heather, gorse, and sandy soil typical of the High Weald — punishes anything offline with quiet efficiency.
Edenbridge sits at the western edge of the Kent Weald, close enough to the Surrey border that the countryside here feels genuinely rural despite being commutable from London. Holtye suits a golfer who values character and tradition over spectacle.
