Rancho/Otero

Tubac sits in the Santa Cruz River valley, about 45 miles south of Tucson and roughly 20 miles north of the Mexican border — one of the oldest European settlements in what is now Arizona, and a town that has quietly become one of the state's more appealing golf destinations. The surrounding high desert landscape runs at roughly 3,000 feet elevation, which means cooler temperatures than Phoenix, clean air, and fairways framed by the Santa Rita Mountains to the east and the Tumacacori Highlands to the west.

Tubac Golf Resort, where Rancho/Otero lives, has a legitimate place in Arizona golf lore — the property dates to the late 1950s and is one of the oldest resort courses in the state. The combination name reflects two distinct nines that can be paired together, each with its own character across the valley floor.

The setting does much of the design work here. Desert vegetation, the occasional riparian corridor, and mountain views in every direction give the round a sense of landscape that a purely manufactured golf experience rarely achieves. It plays as a resort course should — accessible, scenic, and unhurried.
